When his father dies, Ward becomes the new lord of Hurog.until a nobleman declares that he is too dim-witted to rule. And it's all that's saved him from death at the hands of his abusive father, who's always seen Ward as a bitter rival for power. But few people know that his foolishness is (very convincingly) feigned. The more familiar you are with Brigg's writing, the less you'll be surprised.DRAGON BONES Most everyone thinks Ward of Hurog is a simple-minded fool-and that's just fine by him. Very predictable in some parts but there are still a few surprises. Outside the asylum, Ward's friends and family have thrown themselves into a rebellion they would not have otherwise joined as it has little chance of succeeding. Since Hurog means dragon the king has correctly reasoned that it will work with Ward's blood. The weapon is powered by blood, specifically the blood of a dragon. There Ward discovers that the king has an ancient weapon known chiefly for the destruction it wrought thousands of years before when most of civilization was wiped out. Under the guise of proving that Ward is indeed sane, the king orders him taken to the insane asylum for examination. In Dragon Blood, Ward finds himself in direct conflict with the High king of the five kingdoms. There he discovers friends he did not expect and a plot against his own Hurog that includes the Dragon Bones unders Ward's keep. In his attempt to do both he travels with his brother, sister, manservant, groom, a runaway slave, and the family ghost to Oranstone to help the people there defend themselves against the Vorsag. He is also trying to prove that he is worthy of Hurog. Throughout the book Ward is continually trying to figure out who he is now that he doesn't have to hide his intelligence.

He had spent years pretending to be stupid in an attempt to keep his father from seeing him as a rival for Hurog and now he needs to prove that he isn't stupid or he will be sent to an insane asylum. In Dragon Bones, Ward inherits Hurog from his tyrannical father. Both have tight plots and most of the story is told in the first person by the main character, Ward of Hurog. I bought this book because I had read it and Dragon blood (the sequal) before and enjoyed it. Review of Dragon Bones and sequal Dragon Blood
